Visit of the Spanish consuls to the Chief Rabbinate

Consul General of Spain in Argentina, Fernando Garcia Casas, and Deputy Consul Mr. Juan Alvar Merino Cubillo have visited the Great Rabbinate of the Sephardic Community of Buenos Aires to talk about cultural projects and to strengthen ties of brotherhood between the Sephardic Community and the Spanish people .

During the meeting, the Chief Rabbi and the consuls discussed various topics related to Sephardic culture and its relationship with Spain. In particular, they highlighted the importance of the Citizenship Law for Sephardic descendants expelled during the inquisition, which allows Sephardim to obtain Spanish citizenship.

This law, passed in 2015, grants Spanish citizenship to descendants of Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492 who can prove their Sephardic ancestry and have cultural or linguistic ties to Spain. This regulation has been very important for Sephardim all over the world and has allowed many people to connect with their roots and recover their cultural and Spanish identity.

The Chief Rabbi personally thanked the consuls for having himself been granted Spanish citizenship through Sephardic descent. He also expressed the immense emotion that reconnects him with the roots of the country that sheltered one of the largest Jewish quarters in world history, in cultural and social terms. Some of the greatest luminaries of the Jewish people such as Maimonides, Nachmanides, Hasdai Crescas and Yosef Caro, among thousands of wise men, philosophers and scientists who enlightened humanity were born there.

Soon the Spanish passport will be delivered to the Chief Rabbi in an important and historic community act. It will be the first time in history that a Chief Rabbi of one of the largest congregations in the Sephardic world is Spanish once again.
