TEENAGERS IN ISOLATION

The World Organization for the Youth made a virtual talk for parents and educators about the problem of teenagers facing the pandemic, due to social isolation.

The conference took place last Tuesday August, 4th, coinciding with the Hebrew date of Tu beAb, of family union, with God and with the people. It had an audience of outstanding parents and educators.

Rabbi Gabriel Sacca, director of Menora, hosted the event. We were honored by the presence of Dr Fabián Triskier, Psychiatrist, who works at INECO Foundation, noted for his trajectory in adolescence, and Chief Rabbi Isaac Sacca,  Chief Rabbi of ACISBA and President of Menora.

Rabbi Isaac Sacca gave 4 tips to help cope with adolescents: treat them with sensitivity, specially due to the current situation of uncertainty; create a dialogue bond; educate them according to their characteristics; give them self-esteem and honor them setting the example of respect.

Dr Fabián Triskier highlighted the importance of giving credence to the suffering that adolescents show for not being able to share with their pairs as usual and for their fear of contagion. He encouraged parents to validate them, to pay attention to them to give them space to express themselves at home and to respect their privacy. At the same time he stressed that social networks are a great help for them in these moments, as long as they are regulated.

Both Dr Fabián and Rabbi Isaac, quoted examples of the Torah, from which we can learn; among them Noah’s flood and the story of Rabí Shimón Bar Iojai and his son.

To conclude, Rabbi Gabriel Sacca asked some questions such as when it is necessary to call a professional and what can help us better cope with the pandemic.

Rabbi Isaac Sacca stood out the importance of prayer, dialogue with God and how profitable this opportunity can be.

Dr Fabián expressed the importance of reinforcing social proximity, despite physical distancing and the importance of staying connected in community.
