Yom Kippur: Setting Achievable Goals

After the preparations during the month of Elul and the observance of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur arrives—a day on which we set aside routine and material concerns to engage in profound introspection. On this sacred day, we devote all our energy to inner reflection, candidly acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking the path toward authentic improvement.

Sincerity is essential in this process. It is insufficient to recite words or make promises that we know we cannot keep. The Torah teaches: “When you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not delay in fulfilling it, for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you would incur guilt. But if you refrain from making vows, you will not incur guilt” (Deuteronomy 23:22–23). From this, the sages warned against treating oaths, vows, and commitments lightly or irresponsibly. It is better to make no promise at all than to offer empty vows driven by momentary emotion.

Yom Kippur therefore calls us to establish realistic goals—specific steps that we can genuinely incorporate into our daily lives. The aim is not to transform everything overnight in a surge of enthusiasm, but to select a path of improvement that is feasible and sustainable. True repentance resides not in grand declarations, but in small, consistent actions that demonstrate authentic change.

The appropriate path is neither illusory nor unattainable, but one that can be followed with integrity through effort and perseverance.

Yom Kippur is observed in its fullest sense when the commitments we make are sincere—when our words are not empty promises but practical expressions of growth. Ultimately, what endures is not the transient euphoria of a moment, but the steady practice of daily renewal.
