Tens of thousands have been killed or injured after a catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6.
The survivors, many of whom have been left homeless, could face “a secondary disaster” due to cold and snow.
The Sephardic community is saddened by this tragedy and from its place has invested efforts in cooperating to the best of its ability to alleviate the consequences of the tragedy.
The Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Argentina Isaac Sacca, together with colleagues from other countries, has summoned the parishioners to pray for the affected and victims. The Great Rabbi Chaim Palachi z”l of Izmir, who died in 1869, and the Great Jajam Bashi of the Ottoman Empire, who wrote a book with prayers and recommendations for the earthquakes that occurred in his period, took the same course of action at their time.
The president of the Sephardic Community of Buenos Aires, Mr. Marcos Daniel Mayo, personally traveled to Turkey and met with the Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community there, Isjak Haleva.
Potentially interested parties were also informed about how to help the victims.
The rest of the Sephardic communities around the world carried out campaigns in dozens of countries.
In addition to the moral obligation as human beings is to help everyone in need, the historical bond and recognition that the Sephardic Jewish community maintains around the world with the Turkish people commits them to solidarity with their brothers.
