On Wednesday, October 7th, 2020 at 8:00 p.m., Chief Rabbi Isaac Sacca and
the Executive Director of ORT Argentina, Dr. Adrián Moscovich, talked about the challenges of education today, within the festive context of Sukkot. More than 100 families, specially invited, participated through Zoom.
Members of the Staff of Bereshit School and ORT Argentina were present , and Romina Aziz, Director of the Kinder garden led the event.
Rabbi Isaac Sacca explained that the study of the Torah goes hand in hand
with the academic training and that Bereshit school complements the Torah with educational sciences.
He recommended 7 tips from the Torah that are also used by professionals in education:
1. Attention: Get the student’s attention. When G’d delivered the Torah to
the people of Israel on Mount Sinai, He first caught their attention with the
sounds of the Shofar, lightning and thunder.
2. Curiosity. The stories of the Torah are gripping. Curiosity is a common
thread in all biblical accounts. This shows us that it is imperative to
maintain curiosity in students.
3. Effort. The Teacher has to encourage students to make an effort to learn,
let them know that the task has some difficulty. As the Talmud says:
“Lefum saará hagrá” (“According to effort, so is the reward”). The biblical heroes, when they were successful, had gone through trials before.
4. Repetition. Review things to remember them. Every year we study the same parties again to incorporate them. Things are incorporated when they are repeated; action generates awareness. Teachers are responsible for generating that repetition.
5. Sleep. Learn and teach young people to sleep. If a child does not sleep 8
hours, he will not learn. The Torah mentions that prophecy came to prophets in their sleep, only when they were sleeping. Sleeping creates an open mind and scientists support it. Today it is not a minor problem since technology does not allow a good rest.
6. Pleasure. You can’t live doing things that you don’t like. Make education
become a pleasure. Let the study be something pleasant and enjoyable. Ze
Eli veanvehú (This is my God and I will beautify him).
7. The younger students are, the more responsible teachers must be,
since it is the time when people have more possibility to incorporate
learnings. The Talmud says: “Guirza deialkutá” ( “The teaching in childhood never goes away”).
Many of these tips are expressed by Stanislas Dehaene, French mathematician and cognitive psychologist, in his book “HOW WE LEARN”.
Dr. Adrián Moscovich spoke about the project that ORT Argentina school has in common with Bereshit school, in a voluntary framework of mutual aid. On the one hand, ORT accompanies Bereshit in the academic training of students and on the other hand, Bereshit brings Jewish education and values to ORT school. He stressed that it is impossible to talk about innovation if you do not have an identity.
In the end, there was a space for questions and answers, which were
basically focused on the educational challenge in the face of the pandemic.
